Robert Joseph

  • Wine Writer and Speaker


Former wine writer for the London Sunday Telegraph, founder-editor of WINE International magazine and author of over 25 books, including the annual Robert Joseph Good Wine Guide, the Complete Encyclopedia of Wine, the Art of the Wine Label and Bordeaux and its Wines. His French Wines has been published in French, Russian, Chinese, Italian and Polish.

In 1984, he launched the International Wine Challenge and built it to become the world’s biggest wine competition, with regional competitions being held in China, Japan, Russia, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Poland. He is now on the board of Mundus Vini in Germany.

A frequent public speaker, he gave the keynote at the 2000 Outlook conference in Adelaide at which he warned the Australian industry against taking its export success of the previous decade for granted.

Since 2005, Robert has focused on producing his own wines – 3.7m bottles of le Grand Noir, sold in over 50 countries, Greener Planet and now a new project in Georgia – and on strategic and digital marketing consultancy for a wide range of companies and regions, ranging from Chateaux Brane Cantenac and Malartic Lagravière in Bordeaux, to Torres, Accolade Wines, Wine Australia and the Republic of Moldova.

His often-controversial weekly thoughts on wine are published on and in Meininger’s Wine Business International, of which he is Editoral Consultant. He is co-presenter of The Real Business of Wine webcast and two books – 20 Shades of Wine and The Future of Wine has Changed –will be published this year.

Paul Baggio

  • Managing Director, Della Toffola Pacific

Paul Baggio is a major driving force behind winemaking, brewing and distillation technology in Australasia. As a third generation wine machinery manufacturer, Paul cut his teeth building wine presses and destemmer crushers at the family factory plant in Melbourne, Victoria. His engineer father, who emigrated from Italy, established Cellar Plus supplying winemaking, brewing and food making equipment to small and medium scale producers across Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Working vintages in Italy in 1995 and 1996, vintages in Stellenbosch and Paarl, South Africa, and California as a brewer, all provided a lasting impression that shaped Paul’s future outlook, providing a unique set of supply-chain and service support businesses to the Australian and New Zealand beverage industries. Paul returned to Melbourne in 1997 and took up the general management role of Cellar Plus which today makes up The Beverage Food Group P/L. The Australian wine industry at that time was gaining momentum and in 1997 Paul established Australian & New Zealand Winemakers P/L, a business unit specialising in the build of small to medium wineries. At the start of 2000, representing Della Toffola S.p.A, new filtration technology such as ceramic membrane cross flow and flash détente were introduced. Yet, it was the central membrane bag press technology that would go on to make the most significant shift to the vinification landscape of the Australian and New Zealand industry. Over the last five years, across Australia and New Zealand, there have been more large scale (160hL and greater sized) Della Toffola presses sold than any other grape press brand. Paul is the Managing Director of Della Toffola Pacific, with over 25 years working in the local industry, and has navigated Della Toffola Pacific to becoming synonymous with leading process vinification technologies and one of the truly dominant suppliers to the Australian and New Zealand wine industry.

Dr. Armando Maria Corsi

  • Associate Professor in Wine Business, The University of Adelaide
The University of Adelaide

Dr. Armando Maria Corsi is an Associate Professor in Wine Business at the University of Adelaide. His key area of research is the analysis of consumer behaviour, particularly towards wine and other premium foods and beverages. Dr. Corsi has been chief investigator of some major projects funded by Wine Australia examining the effects of non-price promotions in store, tracking the ever-changing Chinese wine market, improving the techniques to describe wines to Asian consumers, and exploring the most effective ways to teach them about wine. More recently, Dr. Corsi completed another two projects about the perceptions of Australian wines and its key competitors by trade, key influencers and suppliers in the US and the UK. Member of the Editorial Board of Food Quality and Preference, the International Journal of Market Research, the Wine and Viticulture Journal, and Economia e Diritto Agroalimentare, Armando is author of more than 70 refereed papers, book chapters and trade articles on wine and food marketing.

Dr. Rebecca Dolan

  • Senior Lecturer/Program Director of Wine Business, The University of Adelaide
The University of Adelaide

Dr. Rebecca Dolan is a Senior Lecturer, specialising in Digital Marketing at The University of Adelaide Business School. Rebecca is also the Program Director of Wine Business. Her research focuses on understanding, facilitating, and optimising customer relationships and customer engagement through online communication strategies. Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) with First Class Honours, as well as a Ph.D. in Business from The University of Adelaide. Rebecca has authored more than 50 referred journal articles, book chapters, and trade articles in the field of marketing.

Dr. Larry Lockshin

  • Professor of Wine Marketing - University of South Australia

Dr. Larry Lockshin is Professor of Wine Marketing and former Head of the School of Marketing at the University of South Australia. He has published over 120 academic articles; over 250 trade articles and has a book on wine marketing, This Little Pinot Went to Market. His research interests are consumer choice behaviour for wine including how extrinsic and intrinsic factors interact. He also works on packaging and shopping behaviour for consumer goods. He is currently working on sustainability in the wine business particularly alternatives to glass packaging, and in-store and online shopping behaviour. He has conducted a number of studies on how consumers respond to packaging and branding of wine.

Ben Luker

  • Country Manager - Australia & New Zealand, Wine Intelligence

Ben Luker is the Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand for Wine Intelligence, the global leader in wine consumer research and insights.

His passion for the industry has allowed him to gain consumer insight firsthand in the US, UK, Asia, NZ and in his home country of Australia.

He has over a decade of experience working in nearly every aspect of the wine industry, ranging from sommelier roles, independent retail, commercial sales, marketing and winemaking operations.

Away from Wine Intelligence, he makes small-scale wines out of Western Victoria under his Good Clean Fun label.

Jakob Mesidis

  • Marketing Scientist, Ehrenberg Bass Institute for Marketing Science

As a Marketing Scientist at the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science, Jakob likes to approach wine marketing through the lens of the consumer.

Jakob’s current area of research focuses on how to best motivate consumer trial of low-carbon wine packaging.

Innately curious about all things wine, with an unwavering desire to help motivate progress within the wine industry, Jakob seeks to answer the questions that will lead to the industry’s growth—especially among younger consumers.

Ralph Moyle

  • Education Coordinator, Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP)

Ralph Moyle FAIP, CPP, is an experienced food-packaging consultant with 40 years in the food processing industry and 25 years focused on packaging.

Through a unique range of senior management experiences in packaging, operations, technical and quality assurance in large and medium FMCG businesses, Ralph has brought increased value to many organisations through the value of smarter packaging at less waste.

Ralph’s packaging knowledge has resulted in successful contemporary designs and material selections, improved shelf life, lower material costs, shorter supply chains and environmentally friendly selections that have provided greater economic value.

Ralph has been instrumental in training over 1000 people in the last 12 months in sustainable packaging, 2025 National Packaging Targets, Australasian Recycling Label and PREP.

Ralph is a past National President of the AIP, a Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) and a Fellow of the AIP. He was also recently awarded the World Packaging Organisation Lifetime Achievement Award and the AIP Founders Award for his significant contribution to packaging education and training in Australasia.

Tim Nowell-Usticke

  • Founder and Director, WineWorks NZ

Tim Nowell-Usticke is the founder and director of WineWorks, a contract wine bottling, storage and distribution business in New Zealand, which he started in 1995. After a chaotic quarter-century of riding the boom of NZ Sauv Blanc, WineWorks is now New Zealand’s market leading contract bottler. Its three plants now carry out bottling for 400 of New Zealand’s 700 wineries, employ a team of 400 people, and WineWorks is generally regarded by its customers to be a model operation. The modus operandi of this company is to enable provision of services, skills and systems for wineries that would not otherwise be able to enjoy the economies of scale that larger wineries can afford. In his time since leaving university in the ‘8os with an honours degree in civil engineering, Tim has had 19 different careers, including five start-ups, and turned around four manufacturing businesses, saving them from receivership.

Greg Stokes

  • Chief Executive Officer, Intelligent Packaging Pty Ltd

Greg Stokes is Chief Executive Officer and founder of Intelligent Packaging Pty Ltd, an innovative Australian company that has been at the forefront of ground-breaking packaging which meet consumer demands for the past two decades.

Greg is the inventor of the globally patented Vinsafe wine in a can packaging technology and system which enables the delivery of quality, stability and longevity in the wine canning process. Greg is also the pioneer of the global canned wine category (fastest growing wine category in the world at present) which is driven by Vinsafe - globally recognised as the foundation for consistent quality canned wine production.

The technology has been licensed to a number of wine industry participants including Pernod Ricard, Constellation, AB InBev/CUB, Brown Brothers etc., with a number of can making and filling facilities also being licensed and accredited to deploy the technology for the wine in a can category globally.

More recently Greg and his team have successfully developed an integrated packaging system for consumable goods (including hard to hold beverages such as wine, seltzers, RTD’s etc. also food, pharmaceuticals, medical, cosmetics) that reduces the use of artificial preservatives whilst at the same time reducing bacterial loads and the subsequent negative impact on the packaged products integrity, all whilst increasing the products shelf life and stability. This unique, proprietary technology is globally patented and is referred to under its registered trademark of IP².

Greg’s background is in law. He is a qualified lawyer and a member of a number of industry organisations. In 2009 Greg was inducted into the Swinburne University Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame under the ‘High-Growth Venture Entrepreneurship’ category. This was an acknowledgement of the entrepreneurial efforts in developing and commercialising the Vinsafe wine in a can concept globally.

Greg is also a lecturer and visiting Fellow at Swinburne University Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship and has spoken at numerous entrepreneurial, industry and technology conferences.

Gemma West

  • Independent Wine Industry Professional

Gemma started in the wine industry in 2001, and since then, has held a variety of operational and management roles. After completing her winemaking degree, Gemma completed vintages in regions across Australia and in California, with winemaking roles encompassing small-scale research winemaking and consulting, to helping wineries develop new products with alternative varieties, to large commercial winemaking.

Whilst working as a winemaker, Gemma decided to pursue her interest in wine business, and completed a MBA. Nine years ago, she moved into wine business, and has since held roles in business improvement, utilising Lean and Six Sigma principles across the wine value chain.

Gemma’s interests are business problem solving for strategic, recurring or complex issues and transformation to improve the leadership, employee and customer experience.
