Oddball The Great

Hugh’s first foray into Saperavi came from a connection with Georgian winemaker - Lado Uzunashvili. Hugh became fascinated, and then obsessed with Saperavi! He ripped up his Petit Verdot vines (some called him a ‘Nutter’ for this!) and planted McLaren Vale’s first Saperavi. 20 successful years later, we are Australia’s most prominent Saperavi producer and Hugh is the president of the Australian Saperavi Association. ‘The Oddball’ should be shared with a meal and as many friends and family as you can find. Bouquet and palate - So plush it smells like velvet looks. Dense plumes of dark fruit engulf as they unfold. Leather, pennies, blood, and tar. Pomegranate molasses, earthy beets, split timber, piecrust, char, and burnt sugar. There’s a savoury finish to the sweet fruit palate – the texture salivating. Coffee grounds, black olives, and wet earth.

From the cradle of human winemaking in Georgia (near Russia), dating back over 8000 years - Saperavi translates to ‘ink’ or ‘dye’ due to the grape’s red skin and unusual red flesh.

Figures of significance have sometimes had their names appended with ‘The Great’. Each year, the best barrels of our Saperavi come together to make a wine of significance...‘Oddball the Great’ arrives wrapped in a traditional Georgian ‘supra’ - a patterned tablecloth used in feasts.
