One of Australia’s most extraordinary wineries is Sevenhill—established by the Society of Jesus in 1851 and the first winery of the Clare Valley.

Sevenhill supplies the alter wine market but wanted to be a contender in the commercial wine scene. In order to do so, the vineyard’s rich religious history had to gently take a back seat and let those heavenly grapes do the talking.

Combining two technologies (paper labels and bottle screen printing) on each bottle was the design and technical challenge. Paper labels had to be applied with precision so the journey line would start and end in the perfect position. This was achieved with extensive R&D with paper stocks, ink profiles and application speeds, which then had to adapt for various bottle shapes, bottle dimensions and label placement.

The journey of these wines began 170 years ago when Sevenhill was founded and the first vines planted. Each bottle features a screen printed journey line that takes our audience all the way back to 1851 to discover the age of the winery, then brings them back to the present moment, to the vintage they are holding in their hand.

The journey line enables Sevenhill to intuitively navigate the sales conversation; lean into the religious history of the Jesuits, talk about the historical site, Br John May, the vineyards, winemaking, focus solely on the wine … or all the above. And this is the impact, flexibility, while having an unmistakable, timeless design that is relevant to how the wine is presented, sold, bought and enjoyed.
